Port Harcourt-based gospel artist, Godswill Adiks Adikibiayeofori, popularly known as Will Adiks, who was assassinated by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday night, December 21st is right now being buried in his hometown, Bolo in Ogo LGA, Okrika, Rivers state.

The handsome gospel minister had been ambushed by gunmen at the Rivers State Axis of the East-West Road while returning back from a programme in Benin, Edo State.

He was rushed to the University Of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in Choba, where he was in coma for hours. On the evening of Thursday, December 22nd, he passed away.

BUHARI DEATH RUMOUR; DELE MOMODU WRITES

Fellow Nigerians, please allow me to say wherever two or more Nigerians are gathered these days the topic of discussion must, naturally, dovetail to our dear President’s state of health and the consequential suggestion that our country is ailing as a result. This controversy didn’t start today. I remember how Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose, the infant terrible of Ekiti State, raised a horrific alarm, just before the 2015 election that eventually catapulted Major General Buhari back to power. He had screamed to the whole world, indeed to high heavens, that the then APC Presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, had suffered brain damage and that he had to be flown abroad in an air ambulance for treatment. I was in London at that time and I remember making frantic calls to impeccable sources who I believe would know the truth. I was able to obtain pictures of visitors to the modest apartment General Buhari was staying at the time, which was somewhere in the high brow Mayfair. The visitors included Nasir El Rufai and Kayode Fayemi and they were able to dispel the ugly rumour even if some doubting Thomases still believed the worst had happened as Fayose continued to spur them on.

It is about two years since that happened and it doesn’t seem much has changed. The only difference is that Buhari is now the President of Africa’s biggest nation and any news about him would be of greater interest to Nigerians, wherever they may be, and indeed the rest of the world. Since assuming power as Executive President, whenever the President has travelled abroad on vacation, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive with all manner of people espousing their own theories as to what is wrong with the President and the sort of treatment he has gone to receive. This trip is no different. It has been compound by the fact that it was announced oin this occasion that the President was going on a medical vacation as he would take the opportunity of his holiday to see his doctors.

NCDC URGES NIGERIANS TO MAINTAIN CLEAN ENVIRONMENT TO AVOID LASS FEVER

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has urged Nigerians to maintain clean environment, free of rodents to prevent and control Lassa fever. The Chief Executive Officer, NCDC, Dr Chike Ihekweazu gave the advice in an interview with the News agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja.

Ihekweazu also advised healthcare workers to report all frontline suspected cases of Lassa fever to local government Disease Surveillance Officers (DSOs). He said that seven states had reported at least one case of Lassa fever with 19 confirmed cases and six people dead since December 2016.

He, however, noted that many laboratories in Nigeria did not have the capacity to diagnose Lassa fever.

According to the NCDC boss, by the second quarter of 2017, the national reference laboratory will be ready, where rapid diagnostic test will be carried without delay.

ONDO STATE ASSEMBLY IMPEACHES SPEAKER AND DEPUTY

It not yet a month old when the inauguration of Mr Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) as the new governor of Ondo State, the state’s House of Assembly yesterday impeached its Speaker, Princess Jumoke Akindele.

Akindele, is a Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) lawmaker representing Okitipupa, in the Southern District of the state. Also impeached was the Deputy Speaker, Fatai Olotu from Akoko division in the Northern District of the state.

The impeachment exercise, was said to have been carried out outside the Assembly premises.

Although details of the impeachment were still sketchy at press time.

FULANI HERDSMEN: PAN YORUBA GROUP LED BY AFENIFERE CONDEMNS NORTHERN GOVERNORS’ PLAN ON FULANI HERDSMEN

The Afenifere Renewal Group, ARG, has condemned the proposal by the Northern Governors Forum, NGF, to open a register for immigrant Fulani herdsmen it earlier described as aliens and threats to Nigeria’s internal security.

Chairman of the Northern Governor’s Forum, NGF, Kashim Shetima of Borno State, told journalists in Kaduna on Tuesday after the forum’s meeting that it would work with relevant authorities to secure Nigeria’s borders and register Fulani immigrants entering into the country to rear cattle.

The chairman of the forum, Kashim Shettima of Borno, spoke at the end of the forum’s meeting in Kaduna, on Tuesday.

According to him, the governors knew that most of the herdsmen involved in killing Nigerian farmers were immigrants from Senegal and Mali.

“We also mapped out new strategies that would be used by the local Fulani herdsmen to rear their cattle without having to move across the country,” he had said.

MR OBUOZO, AN APC CHIEFTAIN WAS KILLED BY UNKNOWN GUNMEN

Unknown gunmen have killed a chieftain of the All Progressives Party, APC, in Obor Community in Osomini area of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Mr. Emmanuel Obuozo was assassinated at the early hours of Wednesday by the gunmen at his residence in Obor community.

Obuozo till his death was the leader of the All Progressives Congress in ward five of ONELGA.

A source who disclosed the incident to our correspondent stated that the suspected assassin invaded the home of the APC chieftain shooting sporadically to make way for the killing of their target.

The source said, “Mr. Emma has been killed by some gunmen whom we have not identified. He is one of the leaders of APC in our community.

2019 ELECTION: GROUP RALLIES FOR OGUN WEST

A pressure group, Yewa Connecting Minds (YCM), has implored all stakeholders in Ogun State to support the aspiration of an indigene of Ogun West District to succeed the incumbent Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

YCM in a statement on Friday, signed by its coordinator, Prince Gbenga Ekunola, said the group was satisfied with the endorsement by the former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the issue of governorship in the state, including that of zoning of the seat to Ogun West district of the State.

Ekunola recalled that Chief Obasanjo while speaking recently in Abeokuta when the leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Ogun State visited him had declared that in the interest of justice and fairness, Ogun west senatorial district in Ogun state should be given the slot to produce the next governor of the state.

He claimed that Ogun West was the most marginalized of the four sections in the political arrangement and calculations, because over 40 years after the creation of the state, the district, comprising the Yewa/Awori people, remained the only section that had yet to produce the governor.

He said their counterparts–the Ijebu, the Egba and the Remo “had within this period had their fair share. The Ijebu and Egba have had their turn in the late Chief Bisi Onabanjo in the Second Republic and Chief Olusegun Osoba, who at two different periods, during the regime of military president, General Ibrahim Babangida and between 1999 and 2003, occupied the office.”‎

Footage from inside his salon shows the maverick barber pouring a flammable powder and liquid over his customer's head before holding a lighter up against his locks, which promptly catch alight.

$153M: EFCC UNCOVERS DIEZANI’S HIDDEN ESTATE

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) suspects it has uncovered a sprawling estate in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State that may belong to former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

It was discovered by operatives of the anti-graft agency in the course of their investigation of public funds allegedly stolen by the former minister.

The investigators  conducted a search on some of the  houses on the estate.

JOHN OKORO, THE NIGERIA DRUG CONVICT HAS BEEN RE-ARRESTED BY THE INDIA POLICE

A Nigerian drug convict, John Okoro, who fled from police custody in India last Monday, has been re-arrested.

Police source said Okoro, who resided in Koparkhairane in Navi Mumbai, was arrested in 2014 in a drug case.

The court convicted him for a three-year jail term. Okoro was sent to Nashik central prison after conviction.

Okoro was released from jail on December 31 and was to be deported to Nigeria. He was brought to the ANC’s Azad Maidan lock up and kept on the first floor. He was due to be deported on the day he
fled.

Due to the insurgency by Boko Haram terrorists that have driven millions from their communities, women in Lake Chad are forced into prostitution to survive, The International Committee of the Red Coss (ICRC) said on Thursday.

The violence has displaced more than 2.4 million people across the swamplands of Lake Chad, where the borders of Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria meet, and disrupted the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of others, ICRC says. Up to a million people have been cut off from humanitarian aid by Boko Haram despite a regional military offensive against the Islamist militants, according to the United Nations.

IMO STATE- PENSIONERS PROTEST NON PAYMENT UP TO 77 MONTHS ARREARS

Pensioners in Imo State, led by the state Chairman, Chief Gideon Ezeji, took to the streets Thursday and blocked both Okigwe road and the entrance to Government House Owerri as they protested the non-payment of their pension.

According to Ezeji; “As at December 2016, the state is owing Imo pensioners between 22 months and 77 months arrears. Our gratuities have remained unpaid since 1998 till date.”

They also described the recent plan by the state government to pay 40 percent of the accumulated arrears only while the pensioners forfeit the remaining 60 percent as callous and inconsiderate.
